Of course, back in the old days, it was forbidden to mention bunnies, also to wear the colour green (made it a bit difficult for me wearing a combat jacket!) and, indeed, to whistle.

Still, that was 47+ years ago and since that particular fraternity, the Deep Sea Fishing fleet, has gone the way of all things (Wireless College, Nimrod fleet, Hercules "K" fleet, The Tavern etc) I don't need to worry about it any more.

So you weren't feeling as sick as a horse on a trawler? (They tend to feel pretty sick unless, of course they are Sea Horses!!) but, in any case, the French for horse is "cheval" from whence we get the titles "chevalier" and thus to "cavalier"

We had a Vauxhall car once upon a time, it was the street-wise sports version, called a "Cavalier Attitude" but we swapped it for an "Austin Taysheous"

I had thought that you had lapsed into the Latin ("mare" - pronounced "marAY", of course - translates as sea).

Mind you, it could have been worse, you could have been suffering from "Mal de mère" which would have meant that you were sick of your mother!!

Ah well, I can't blame it on Captain Morgan but I suppose I can lay at least SOME of the blame on John Barleycorn.

Hmm, as far as I can trace, the last email I sent you was on 29th Dec reference the Flying Scotsman TV programme so perhaps it WAS spam.

What was the subject?

Or perhaps I'm just being a bit dull and you are referring to my last submission in The Tavern (I've been a bit under the weather lately!)

As for Mr T (no, not the actor in the "A Team", the other one), under his recent order, I doubt we would be allowed into the Good 'Ole US of A, probably wouldn't be allowed to phone, Skype or email either, all communications would be stopped at point of entry and detained indefinitely!

They' spammed' the Tavern message! By the way I hear that there are hundreds of phobias knocking around. My favourites are KOUMPOUNOPHOBIA fear of buttons. I wondered why I couldn't press 'button B' in the old telephone boxes, to get my pennies back. Remember?  Then OIKOPHOBIA the fear of household goods. I thought that was the fear of ex R.A.F. men!  Howabout  GLOBOPHOBIA the fear of balloons? Any suggestions for the phobia, the fear of FORUMS?  I know a lot of people suffering from this one! How dare you even think of the Flying Scotsman as spam?  Hope you come back up from under the weather soon. It probably stems from your aircraft days. I believe your lot flew under the weather when possible.

Well, every day's a school day and you're never too old to learn, I thought OIKOPHOBIA was a fear of Grammar School pupils!!

I did not mean to intimate that "The Flying Scotsman" was spam - surely you know me better than that - I merely indicated that the last email I sent you was to let you know about the programme, so any SUBSEQUENT email might well have been spam, if, indeed you were referring to an email not my last Forum submission.

Besides, even spam would be welcome on the Forum, at least it is some kind of communication and would indicate that somebody knows we are here.

As to a fear of Forums (grammatically that should, perhaps, be Fora, but who cares), the best I can come up with at the moment is COMMUNICOPHOBIA, a bit weak I know but I'll try and come up with something better before the reunion.

Actually, I've flown UNDER the weather, OVER the weather and THROUGH the weather, sometimes in the course of the same mission!

People pay good money to be thrown around and bounced about on fairground rides - waste of money, just fly through a series of Cu-Nims and get paid for doing it.  Laughing

My current disharmony is a recurrence of an old problem but I'm getting over it gradually.

YOUR turn to get there before ME, well done (mind you, I was having internet problems this morning, plus I had a medical appointment at 9 o'clock - still, NO EXCUSE).

Not that anyone else appears to be even REMOTELY interested.

Just had a look, that will be all the excuse Conwy Council needed to demolish it, which is what they wanted in the first place.

Such a shame but it would have cost an arm and a leg to refurbish it now, all down to the fact that it was allowed to deteriorate so badly to begin with.

Councils, nationwide, strapped for cash, will take every opportunity to make cuts where they can.

My what a world we live in, one thing I'm grateful for, reflecting on my past opportunities, employments and achievements, is that I'm not starting out now.

Adlestrop by Edward Thomas

Yes, I remember Adlestrop —

the name, because one afternoon
Of heat the express-train drew up there
Unwontedly. It was late June.

The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Was Adlestrop – only the name

And willows, willow-herb, and grass,
And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than the high cloudlets in the sky.
And for that minute a blackbird sang
Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds
Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire

Don,This poem is one of the most beautiful ever written!

Don,I hope this doesn't bore you but I have just discovered that the author of Adlestrop, written May 11th 1914 was killed in action at the Battle of Arras,France in 1917. There's a   beautifully poignant reading by Richard Burton on Youtube.   I'll go now before I have us all in tears!!!!
