Ian Lodge - WC 1953

I regret to inform you that I have received the following message from Ian Lodge:

Sadly our wonderful husband and father Dennis Lodge passed away peacefully from cancer related issues on the 26th of September. We were all at his bedside in the hospice in his last hours.
Words cannot fully describe how loved Dennis was. He was a "Renaissance man", equally ready to quote Shakespeare or teach an Alaskan native. He would help anyone, carry on deep conversations on a myriad of topics, and throw himself into all sorts of challenges like boat building, car repair as well as home building and remodeling. He was a nautical man his whole life - from his early days with the British Merchant Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary, to his teaching days at the White Fish Authority in Hull. In 1980 his teaching skills and maritime knowledge brought him (and us) to Clatsop College in Oregon and to AVTEC in Alaska.  It was an amazing new life for us all in Oregon, Alaska, California and finally here in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Besides being a caring Dad to Ian, Sarah, Naruhito, and Adriana, he was also a dear uncle and brother in law, fantastic grandad to Christopher, David and Molly and a great friend to many. After 52 years of togetherness Eleanor is missing her dear husband so much.  Dennis was her soulmate and they were inseparable during all their wonderful life adventures around the world.

We have a hole in our lives that is seemingly impossible to fill, but as you all know, Dennis was always positive and cheerful and would want us to move forward. We want to fill the hole he left with loving family, close friends and wonderful memories - and have lives that would make him proud.

In accordance with his wishes Dennis did not want to have a funeral or a remembrance service. He didn't want to trouble anyone with that. Please keep him in your loving thoughts.

I never knew him but he sounds like a great guy who got a lot out of life, too few of those around these days.

Dennis Lodge - Message received entitled 'Out to Sea'

The 16th of April this year would have been Dennis’ 80th birthday.  On that day in accordance with his wishes Ian, Sarah and I scattered his ashes in the Columbia River near Astoria, Oregon.  The charter boat captain made sure that the tide was going out into the Pacific Ocean.  We sent Dennis on his last and greatest voyage with love and tears.  Rose petals followed the ashes on their way to the sea, in memory and love from his relatives and friends.

It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the 80s, which was so unusual for rainy Astoria.  We were amazed to see a halo around the sun!  It stayed with us, except for briefly dissipating as we scattered Dennis’ ashes, only to reappear again immediately after.  Confirmation that we were doing everything right.

Astoria was our first home in America 36 years ago, we took the time to revisit many places that held fond memories for us. The Astor column has a granite slab among many with Dennis’ name etched on it, representing a donation to restore this famous Astoria landmark.  Amazingly, from a sea of 300 slabs we found Dennis’ slab immediately.

His legacy is continued through our lives, and that of his three beloved grandchildren, Christopher, David and Molly.

We appreciate your kind thoughts during this sad time.

Eleanor, Ian and Sarah

Poignant and very beautiful, I never knew Dennis but I am touched by this post.

Re: Ian Lodge - WC 1953

Only just found this notice & am unbelievably saddened by the news of Dennis's death. We were classmates at WC in '52-53 & Dennis & Eleanor had visited us in NZ around 2000 or so.
If anyone knows Eleanor's email address, please forward this to her.
RIP old friend!
Mike Hutchins.
