Hmm, according to the index, as of today, we have had 627 posts in The Hostilery.

Should we not have "overflowed" into this channel? (more than 500 posts)

Poems by Edward Thomas : 4 / 93 « A PrivateAfter Rain »
Adlestrop

Yes, I remember Adlestrop --
The name, because one afternoon
Of heat the express-train drew up there
Unwontedly. It was late June.

The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Was Adlestrop -- only the name

And willows, willow-herb, and grass,
And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than the high cloudlets in the sky.

And for that minute a blackbird sang
Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds
Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire

'Adelstrop' by Edward Thomas.

Don,this must be one of the most beautiful poems ever written. Penned when the author's train stopped unexpectedly at a sleepy railway station in the Cotswolds on a  hot Summers day exactly 100 years ago this week.
Tragically he was killed during WW1, in France.
Mr.Beeching destroyed Adelstrop with many other station in the Sixties,in the name of progress!
Come on Alan that poem must sting you into on of your much missed pithy comments!  Keep calm,Jack.

A beautiful poem - Yes
A beautiful place - Yes
A sad destruction of a beautiful railway - Yes

A waste of a beautiful life - YES

I shall say no more for no more need be said.

Well Jack, I am Scottish by birth and lineage but British by inclination and purpose, I always was and always will be - I have already told you about how I felt concerning the ludicrous notion of Scottish independence.

Besides which, as a Scot living in England I had NO VOTE whereas English people living in Scotland, including students studying at Scottish Universities DID, how does that relate to any notion of what the SCOTTISH PEOPLE might want?

And, as for the blatantly transparent ploy of including 16 and 17 year-olds in the vote, which section of ANY population is likely to be the most radical? (Down to the hormones I suppose).

Anyway, the deed is done and a relatively sensible verdict has been delivered, however, the back-tracking politicians have had to make concessions that they ABSOLUTELY ruled out before the referendum. (That shows just how much they were panicking at the end).

Well, hopefully, it has made them sit up and take a bit more notice of those who elected them (and those who didn't but still have to live with the consequences of their tenure) I'm not hopeful that that will be the case and I'm sure that once the furore has died down and the post mortems been completed, they will lapse into their own smug self-serving ways.

The vast majority of the electorate of this country are politically apathetic and (hopefully, unlike the apathy that rules on this forum ) that is down to the fact that politicians are not trusted.

Hmmm, Edwards Major, you're at it again, winding me up then pulling the pin and  retiring to a darkened room with a glass of Captain Morgan's to watch the fireworks  and listen to the Squadronaires!(what fireworks? Like as if anyone is interested)Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil
